Lives and works in London.
After having exhibited together with David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj at the 1961 Young Contemporaries show, Blake won first prize in the Junior Section at the 1961 John Moores Liverpool Exhibition for his painting Self Portrait with Badges. During the late 1950s, Blake became one of the best known British Pop artists.
His first retrospective exhibition was held as early as 1969 at the City Art Gallery, Bristol. A second retrospective was held at the Tate Gallery, London in 1983.
His works have been exhibited throughout the world since the early 70s. Recently, in 2006, a special solo show was held at the London Fine Art, Design and Antiques Fair.
Blakes art is not so much a social comment on popular culture as it is more an affectionate depiction of content. His attitude towards the subjects of his art is that of a fan or aficionado. The Love (2004) portfolio is literally a souvenir of his love affair as a fan with the icons of our times.
Numerous art institutions throughout the world have his works in their collection. To name a few: the Galerie Claude Bernard, Paris
, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna, Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate Gallery, London.
Blake became a Royal Academician in 1981, a CBE in 1983 and in 2002 Blake received a knighthood for his services to art. Retrospectives of Blake's work were held at the Tate in 1983 and Tate Liverpool in 2008. In February 2005, the Sir Peter Blake Music Art Gallery, located in the School of Music, University of Leeds, was opened by the artist. The permanent exhibition features 20 examples of Blake's album sleeve art, including the only public showing of a signed print of his Sgt. Pepper's artwork. In March 2011, Blake was awarded an honorary DMus from the University of Leeds, an event also marked by the public unveiling of his artwork for the Boogie For Stu album. On 18 July 2011, Blake was awarded an Honorary degree for Doctor of Art from Nottingham Trent University.
