David Nadel is celebrated for his enchanting photographs taken in the mountains of northwestern Montana. His images capture forests that have been scorched by wildfires. These snow-filled landscapes are an extraordinary photographical feat: at a remove they have the appearance of finely rendered etchings or charcoal drawings. While the works are colour photographs, the charred forests appear monochromatic. The blackened trees are reminiscent of hand-sketched lines, giving the works a lyrical quality. They are compellingly atmospheric, capturing nature as haunting and sublime.

The artist uses a large format camera while hiking through dramatic and expansive terrain. Nadel’s images push the boundaries of what photography can achieve. They flatten the landscape, encouraging the eye to perceive the forest as an almost abstract image composed of graphic lines, contrasting forms, pattern, light and shade.

Nadel’s work has been exhibited at the Soho Photo Gallery in New York, the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, and with +Kris Graves Projects in New York.
