Chagoya's art is concerned with cultural imperialism. According to the artist, he does 'reverse anthropology', by revealing the way in which countries with political power have been moulding artistic discourses throughout the globe.

In The Enlightened Savage, 2002, Chagoya made "Cannibull's Soup" cans with the titles of ten different flavours from "Museum Directors's Tripe" to "Collector's Broth". The artist highlights issues of Western modern art such as machinery of capitalist production in art market. Melding roles of artist and cultural historian, Enrique Chagoya creates alternative interpretations of current events. His works present records of recent and ancient history, or double exposures of political icons with Disney icons.

Chagoya has exhibited throughout the USA including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Rosa, CA in 2005 and the traveling retrospective show at Des Moines Art Center, IA, Berkeley Art Museum, CA and Palm spring Art Museum, CA in 2008.

Chagoya's works are in the public collections of prestigious art institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC., the De Young Museum, the LA County Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, the Des Moines Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library.

Chagoya is currently Professor of Art at Stanford University.
