Kareem Lotfy does not limit himself to one discipline, instead he works in diverse media ranging from stencil and oil to sound and digital imagery. Lofty’s work embodies a fascination with mass communication. Growing up in a heavily religious Muslim family in Cairo, the artist experienced a fascinating new mix of foreign cultures, as a result of new forms of mass communication. Lotfy continues to be inspired by the clash and convergence of Middle Eastern and Western cultures in his native Egypt. Through his multimedia practice, the artist confronts current political, cultural and social issues, as well as processes of representation and expression.
In 2010, Lofty was awarded a 3 month residency programme involving performance, video and installation, courtesy of The Mediamatic Lab and Post Internet Survival Guide, Amsterdam, Netherlands. In recent work the artist has experimented with the idea of the reproduced image and the Internet as a digital space.
Lofty exhibits internationally, including in the UK, Netherlands, Dubai, Egypt, Singapore and the USA.
