Thad Simerly takes everyday objects and subverts their common roles and identities, pushing the boundaries of what he calls ‘limitations imposed by familiarity’.
Objects such as popsicles and rubber bands are typical symbols of functional objects as opposed to aesthetic ones. These objects juxtaposed together in his Combines as well as two dimensional works create a third imagery.
According to the artist, his art is concerned with the issue of the way in which disparate objects produce “an entirely new form, but at the same time transcend this immediate recognition of its individual parts.”
